The rights we strive for are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Those rights are embedded in International Law through the United Nations human rights treaties. They consist of civil and political rights such as equality before the law, freedom from torture, freedom of opinion and expression, freedom of thought, conscience and religion, and the right to take part in the government of one&#8217;s own country.
