Abstract

Empirical data has established that widespread environmental pollution has created serious threat to our planet. Environmental pollution has given rise to global warming, green house effect, sea-level rise, loss of biodiversity, and depletion of ozone layer. Successive reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have confirmed the above mentioned adverse impacts of the environmental pollution. International community became concerned about what to be done to reduce emission. In 1992, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was formed and countries considered the ways to be adopted collectively to reduce green house gases and to fight the adverse impacts of climate change. The nations around the globe have realized the necessity to develop a just international environmental order to fight environmental dangers, including the adverse impacts of climate change. Development of a just international environmental order needs the cooperation of developed and developing nations. Their collective efforts are sine qua non for developing tools to fight environmental dangers. But developed and developing countries are not in consensus to fight the environmental menace in the same manner. This article has made an overview of the environmental challenges created to our planet. It has noted that the international environmental law developed by the international actors is in its formative stage and is considered as ‘soft law’. This article argues the necessity of establishing a just international environmental order to fight environmental challenges and put forward the imperatives that we should do collectively.
